Texas Hold'em Poker Hand Rankings
Using a deck of cards (excluding jokers), the game requires a minimum of two players. At the beginning of each round, each player is dealt two private cards, and five community cards are placed face-up on the table. The ranking of hands is determined by the best five-card combination of the player's two private cards and the five community cards. There are ten hand rankings in Texas Hold'em Poker:
Texas Hold'em Poker Game Flow
Step 1: Determine the position of the dealer (Button)
The player who is designated as the dealer (also known as the Button) is responsible for dealing the cards for the current game. In Texas Hold'em, the dealer is the last player to act during each betting round after the cards are dealt. When the dealer folds, the player closest to the dealer's right-hand side gets the last action. After a game ends, the dealer moves one position clockwise
Step 2: Initial Betting
Before the game starts, the player to the left of the dealer must place a small blind bet, while the player to their left must place a big blind bet. The small blind is usually half the amount of the big blind. Players can also agree on other details before the game starts
Step 3: Start Dealing
The positions of the small blind and big blind are determined by the dealer, with the player closest to the dealer's left being the small blind and the next player being the big blind. Dealing starts from the small blind position and proceeds in a clockwise direction, with one card being dealt to each player at a time. Once the dealer position is reached, the second card is dealt starting from the small blind position until all players have two cards
Step 4: Pre-flop Betting
After all, players receive their two cards, the first betting round begins with the player to the left of the big blind. Each player faces the same three options:
- Call: Match the previous player's bet
- Raise: Increase the bet amount (the amount of the raise depends on the game rules, but it is customary to raise at least twice the big blind amount)
- Fold: Give up the hand and not participate in the game
Limit Texas Hold'em: You can only increase the bet amount to the same as the big blind
Pot Limit Texas Hold'em: You can only increase the bet amount to the maximum amount on the table (after all bets have been placed)
No Limit Texas Hold'em: You can increase the bet amount to any amount up to the number of chips you have. If you bet all of your chips, it's called going "All-In"
Step 5: Flop Betting
After the first betting round before the flop, three community cards are dealt, and the second betting round begins. The action starts with the player to the left of the small blind and proceeds clockwise. During this round, players may also choose to check, which means they do not bet and pass the action to the next player
Step 6: Turn Betting
The fourth community card is called the Turn. Once the betting before the turn is complete, the next betting round begins with the player to the left of the small blind, and players can decide on their actions based on their hand and the community cards
Step 7: River Betting
The fifth and final community card is called the "River". Once the second round of betting is complete, the river card is dealt, and a new betting round begins. After all players have acted, the remaining players reveal their cards to determine the winner, known as a "Showdown". If only one player remains, they win the pot. If multiple players remain, the player with the best hand using any five of the seven available cards (their two-hole cards and the five community cards) wins the pot. If multiple players have the same hand, the pot is divided equally among them
Step 8: Moving the Dealer Position
The dealer position is passed clockwise to the next player, and a new game starts
